HDMI and DisplayPort are two of the most common connector types for transmitting video and audio from devices to displays. They both have different versions that offer different features and capabilities. In this article, we will compare the latest versions of these connectors, HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4, and see which one is better for your display needs.

But first, let’s learn a little more about display output ports in general and their different types.

What Are Display Output Ports?

Display output ports are the connectors that allow you to connect your computer or other devices to a monitor, TV, or projector. They transmit video and sometimes audio signals from the source to the display. There are different types of display output ports, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Some of the most common ones are:

  • HDMI: High-Definition Multimedia Interface. This is the most widely used port for connecting devices to TVs, monitors, and projectors. It can carry both video and audio signals, and supports high resolutions and refresh rates. HDMI is also compatible with other standards, such as DVI and VGA, with adapters. There are different versions of HDMI, such as HDMI 1.4, HDMI 2.0, and HDMI 2.1, which offer different features and capabilities.
  • DVI: Digital Visual Interface. This is an older port that is mainly used for connecting computers to monitors. It can only carry video signals, so you need a separate cable for audio. DVI supports high resolutions and refresh rates, but not as high as HDMI or DisplayPort. There are different types of DVI, such as DVI-D, DVI-I, and DVI-A, which differ in the type of signal they can transmit (digital, analog, or both).

Here at Appuals, we are very enthusiastic about hardware. As such, we hold everything we review to an incredibly high standard. Whether you are talking about graphics cards or HDMI RF Modulators, we test everything from functionality to value to ensure that our readers always buy the best products for their needs.

One of our leading hardware writers, Asad Khan, has years of experience when it comes to display-related hardware and audiophile gear. Whether it is old CRT TVs or the latest and greatest 4K OLED monitors, he has seen it all. He also has a passion for retro-tech and providing insights on how older technology can co-exist with our modern devices.

Under Asad’s lead, our highly experienced tech team sifted through dozens of modulators. We considered every factor such as build quality, features, quality, and overall value. To give an unbiased review, we go over all these aspects thoroughly and make sure we compare each product accordingly. Whether you are looking for a value-oriented option or the absolute king of the hill, we can help you find what you need.

What Is an HDMI RF Modulator?

An HDMI RF Modulator takes HDMI input from devices with HDMI output. This includes media players, set-top boxes, or consoles. It converts the signal from these devices into Radio Frequency also known as RF. This is then transmitted through a wire, usually a coaxial or A/V cable. These RF signals can also be received by TVs with antennas if you are looking to go towards a wireless route.

Input

RF modulators come in various shapes and sizes with different input features. However, since we are mainly talking about HDMI RF Modulator the input is usually HDMI. So, each modulator on this list features an HDMI port that can take input from modern devices such as consoles, gaming PCs, laptops, and even Blu-Ray Players.

Modulation

HDMI RF Modulators work by converting HDMI signals to RF, short for radio frequency. However, directly converting them can cause a loss of video and audio stutters or quality. This is usually due to interference. Hence, the HDMI signals are passed through or mixed with higher frequency waves to prevent. That’s where the “modulation” comes into play, hence the name.

To sum it up, it takes the signal as an HDMI input, converts it into an RF signal, and cleans up the loss of quality. The image/video then shows up on your TV without any real loss of image quality. Of course, this also depends highly on what sort of TV you pair the modulator with.

Output

After cleaning up the quality a bit through the modulation process, the HDMI RF Modulator will output the image/video to your TV of choice. Usually, an HDMI RF modulator will feature only a single RF output. You will need a coaxial cable to connect the device to your TV. In some cases, you’ll even find an HDMI output on these modulators. That will come in handy in case you want to connect different TVs or displays from a single source.

Do I Need an HDMI RF Modulator?

By now, hopefully, you are aware of how an HDMI RF Modulator works. Most of the time, it is a cheap and easy way of taking advantage of that old TV that you have lying around. If you want to get some use out of it, picking up an HDMI modulator is a good choice. Considering the recent rise of retro gaming and hardware in the past few years, it’s an easy way to get the old-school experience without wasting a lot of money.

More Retro Tech: Best Retro Handhelds

There’s another niche use case for these modulators. They can be used to separate audio and video signals from such as cameras, portable VCRs, satellite receivers, or even from computers. It then turns these signals into VHF TV signals. This works well for TVs that don’t have a composite video output.

Many HDMI RF modulators are also popular for distributing a single signal from something like a TV player to hundreds of TVs. However, those products are more catered towards professionals, and won’t be found as easily with retailers.

In most cases, if you have a TV that only takes a coaxial cable as an input, then you’ll need an HDMI RF modulator if you want to use it with modern devices. At the end of the day, it’s cheaper than buying a brand-new TV after all.

How We Picked and Tested

Usually, when we’re putting together a “best of” article on Appuals, we put every product through a rigorous and tedious testing process. Selecting the best of the best HDMI RF Modulators among the myriad of options available online was no easy task. This is especially considering the fact that most of them are professional-grade options, and feature information that is confusing to the average consumer.

As such, we decided to compile our list based on ease of use, the setup process, and overall result in terms of image quality. Everything else was just marketing fluff. Keeping these three things in mind, we were able to compile six of the best HDMI RF Modulators out there.

Of course, some are more expensive than others. This doesn’t necessarily mean that expensive RF modulators aren’t worth it, it’s just that a good number of them might not be worth it for you. Most people reading this already have a niche use case, and further confusing them with utterly expensive options would not make much sense.

Despite that, we still included a few high-end options for the odd reader that is looking out for some professional gear. After we cherry-picked six of these modulators, we decided to test them based on different metrics.

The most important to us was image quality. It’s fine if a modulator can just provide a simple output, but if the image quality is bad, then the experience is not worth it. As such, we made sure that every modulator on our list would not get any complaints from the average reader.

The modulators were then ranked based on ease of use, setup process, and again, the quality of the image output. After extensive research and thinking, the above list is what we ended up going with.

Buyer’s Guide

The modulator market is confusing, and it is filled with technicalities. For a new buyer, it can be overwhelming and hard to find a good option, And the saturation of the market does not help as well.

To make your life a little easier and help you find what you are looking for, our team tested dozens of modulators and sifted through tons of options to ensure you get the right product.

And after investigating, we have compiled a list of factors that you need to consider before buying an HDMI Modulator

Video Quality

Video quality is a big factor when it comes to buying an HDMI RF modulator. So, it is a good practice to always check video output in the specification area.
When it comes to quality everyone has preferences. Now, most modulators have 1080p video output which is usually adequate for most people. But if you are looking for the top-notch 4k experience, it can cost premium

Connectivity

RF modulators come in different varieties with different input and output supports.
And speaking from experience it is a real hassle if you buy something and end up finding out it does not support your device. So, it helps to research a bit about your TV’s connectivity and the ports and input options it has. Most options we included in our list have HDMI to AV and Coax support so you can check them out too.

Value for Money

Like everything, the prices of HDMI RF modulators vary a lot. There are options under 100$ while other costs more than 500$. Surprisingly the prices do not relate to the quality of the modulator at all.

It usually depends on what your problem, in particular, is but it is still wise to read the feature list and see if it has value for money and if the features match the price. It is a good practice to compare the features with the cheaper ones and see the value you are getting for that extra money.

Best HDMI RF Modulators - FAQs

Are RF Modulators still used?

Usually, you’ll find that RF modulators are still used in conditions where a display requires an audio/video signal through a coaxial cable. Most modern devices these days don’t have an RF port, so an HDMI modulator is crucial. They are also widely used in stadiums, hotels, malls, airports, etc.

Can RF be converted to HDMI?

RF signals can be converted to HDMI signals by using an RF to HDMI adapter/converter. These devices do the opposite job of an RF modulator. They take input input from coaxial cables, and the output is carried to your device by an HDMI cable. Projectors are a common use case.

How do you hook up an RF Modulator to an older TV?

You can easily hook up an RF modulator to an older TV by using the right cables. Connect a coaxial cable from the TV jack to the RF modulator. Then, connect an HDMI cable from the modulator to your source (DVD player, Console, PC, etc). You should now have a working signal.

What does an HDMI modulator do?

An HDMI modulator transforms input from an HDMI signal and outputs it in the form of an RF (antenna) signal. This allows you to view the image/video from the source device in full resolution, even on older TVs.

Buyer’s Guide

If you’re a serious driving game enthusiast, you know that a gaming steering wheel can make all the difference in your gameplay. Not only does it add to the realism of the experience, but it can also help you perform better and enjoy the game more. Here’s a buyer’s guide to help you choose the right steering wheel for your gaming needs:

Compatibility

This is the most important factor of all. You don’t want the hassle of buying a wheel and then finding out it does not work with your system. Make sure to check the product website for information about its compatibility.

Build Quality

The second point to consider while looking for steering wheels in the market is the build quality. Simulation games are all about bridging the gap between games and reality. Your experience won’t be immersive if your steering wheel feels like plastic. Therefore, you need to look for something with a premium build. It should be made with premium materials like leather, so you feel like you are holding a real steering wheel rather than a cheap copy.

Force Feedback

Force feedback is a feature in steering wheels that recreates the real steering experience. This is usually done by the motors inside the wheelbase. It creates resistance when driving at high speeds and through sharp turns, just like you would in a real car.

Hence, if you want a realistic experience, go with a steering wheel that supports force feedback.

Pedals

Most gaming steering wheels come with pedals, which add to the realism of the driving experience. Look for a steering wheel with adjustable pedals that can be customized to your preferences.

Customizability

A good gaming steering wheel should allow for customizability, such as programmable buttons, adjustable force feedback levels, and other settings that can be personalized to your liking.

Price

There are a plethora of options when it comes to gaming steering wheels. So, you need to consider your budget when looking for one. There are many good budget options in the market, and we have listed a few of them here as well. Similarly, going for a high-end, expensive wheel is not as bad an idea as you think. A DOCSIS 3.1 Modem is different from traditional DSL modems. Both DOCSIS and DLS are two different technologies used for high-speed internet access. DSL modems use an RJ11 connector to provide internet access from your ISP to your home. On the other hand, DOCSIS modems use a coaxial cable for the same purpose. If you have a cable connection for the internet and are tired of paying a monthly fee for your modem, it’s time to buy your own.

However, before you do so, there are a lot of things you need to consider. Factors such as Wi-Fi standards, maximum speed, security features, and the number of ports can all affect the performance and overall stability of any DOCSIS modem. Besides that, finding the best modem out of dozens of available options can be quite difficult.

There are then additional questions such as whether you even need a DOCSIS 3.1 modem over a 3.0 modem in the first place. In this in-depth guide, we’ll be answering all of those questions to help you find the best DOCSIS 3.1 modem for your needs.

DOCSIS 3.1 Modem vs DOCSIS 3.0 – Which is Better for You?

While DOCSIS 3.0 modems are generally more cost-effective, DOCSIS 3.1 features faster speeds and enhanced security. There are significant differences between the two, especially when it comes to performance, pricing, and availability. With DOCSIS 3.0, you will likely save a lot of money on initial costs. There’s also a large likelihood that you’ll have more used or refurbished devices to pick from.

However, DOCSIS 3.1 tops out at 200 Mbps upstream and 1 Gbps downstream. On the other hand, DOCSIS 3.1 modems can deliver speeds of up to 10 Gbps for the downstream and 1-2 Gbps for the upstream. The older version has been around since 2006, so there’s no wonder that there’s a major speed difference between the two.

DOCSIS 3.1 modems are also more likely to provide better security features such as WPA3 encryption. You also get support for additional features such as Mesh Wi-Fi support, Dual-band or Tri-band Wi-Fi, and better built-in routers (on some models). They are also better for long-term use as DOCSIS 3.0 is likely to be outdated in the coming years.

It’s also more likely that your ISP only supports DOCSIS 3.1, as that is starting to become the industry standard. However, if you don’t have a need for the high speeds that DOCSIS 3.1 can provide, it’s better to go with DOCSIS 3.0 if your ISP still supports it.

Factors To Consider When Buying a DOCSIS 3.1 Modem

While you’re on the hunt for the best DOCSIS 3.1 modem, there are several factors that you need to consider. A good modem will elevate your internet speed and give you a reliable connection to the web. However, that’s only possible if you know what you are looking for.

With that said, it can prove to be a bit of a hassle to find the right modem for your needs. While sticking with our recommendations is a good idea, we understand that it may not always be possible. It’s very likely that some of the items go out of stock, get discontinued, or inflate in terms of pricing. If that happens, we’ve put together this buyer’s guide to save you the headache.

After testing dozens of DOCSIS 3.1 modems and sifting through multiple versions, we came across factors that make or break these devices. These are the things you should know when you’re planning on getting a DOCSIS 3.1 modem for your home.

Compatibility

Before you go about buying any DOCSIS 3.1 modem, it is important to consider that it is compatible with your cable internet service provider (ISP). Providers such as Comcast, Charter, and Altice can be quite picky with what devices they support. Check with your provider or consult their website to determine what modems or brands are approved for their network.

With that said, a lot of modems will work fine with almost any cable provider out there. Just make sure your modem can take full advantage of your internet speed. If your modem is slower than the speeds your ISP provides, you will be bottlenecking yourself severely. Also, make sure the modem can support multiple devices like different routers, access points, PCIe Wi-Fi cards, laptops, and more.

Speed and Channel Bonding

The best DOCSIS 3.1 modem is one that can support your ISP’s maximum provided speeds. A good modem should be capable of keeping up with high-speed internet without issues. Fortunately, even a lot of the cheaper modems these days are capable of supporting a gigabit connection. Considering how most households have an internet speed slower than that, this shouldn’t be too much of an issue.

However, make sure that the modem supports newer routers with Wi-Fi 6/6E. This is a newer Wi-Fi version that has become standard with modern networking devices. Many phones, tablets, laptops, and computers all support Wi-Fi 6. If you get a modem that does not support it, you’ll be missing out on faster speeds, lower latency, and better efficiency.

Many of the best DOCSIS 3.1 modems also feature channel bonding. They can bond multiple downstream and upstream channels, significantly increasing the data throughput and improving overall performance. Make sure that this is a feature mentioned on any modem that you are planning on buying.

Ports

A modem is the central hub of your home’s internet connection. As such, it is important to look out for ports and other forms of connectivity to support all of your devices. A good DOCSIS 3.1 modem should have at least two Gigabit Ethernet ports so you can connect routers and other devices. Many higher-end models will have at least four.

Modems that have built-in routers should have multiple ports so that you can connect smart-home devices, gaming consoles, your PC, or even smart TVs. These combo modems/routers also feature multiple USB ports that let you connect devices such as printers, external storage, or network adapters.

If a modem does have a router built-in, make sure it supports Wi-Fi 6 at the very least. It should also provide sufficient coverage for your house.

The Setup Process

Ideally, you should be able to talk to your ISP and get a technician that can help you set up the new modem. But considering ISPs want you to pay a monthly fee for using their modem, they are less likely to help you out. This depends on where you live and how good of a customer service your ISP offers. So, when on the hunt for the best DOCSIS 3.1 modem, find one that’s easy to set up.

You can go about this by making sure that the modem has a good number of ports, seamless compatibility with your network provider, and a user-friendly interface for accessing settings and configuring your network. Modems can be quite a pain to set up at times, but you will be alright if you know what to look for and closely follow the user guide present in the box.

Pricing and Value

Last but not least, you’ll want to worry about how much you’re willing to spend. DOCSIS 3.1 modems can cost anywhere from $60 to $400 (USD) and beyond. That’s quite a wide range and picking a modem for yourself out of that makes the buying decision a bit difficult. Just keep in mind that because something is cheap, that does not mean it is bad or of low quality. Similarly, not every high-end modem is going to be good in terms of value.

Prioritize the features, ports, flexibility, and speed that you need instead of just looking at the price. Once you know what to look for, start hunting for modems that have everything you’re looking for and fall within your budget. For example, if you already have a decent enough router, you don’t need to buy a modem that has a router built in. You’ll end up saving quite a bit of money this way.

Best DOCSIS 3.1 Modem - ARISS SURFboard.
ARISS SURFboard SB8200.

This is a cable modem that is compatible with most cable internet providers in the USA. It features support for Comcast, COX, Spectrum, and more. The wide compatibility alone makes it an obvious choice as it translates to a seamless setup process. Speaking of which, this DOCSIS 3.1 modem only takes a minute or two to set up. Plug it into the wall, download the SURFboard companion app, follow the step-by-step instructions, and you’re good to go.

It’s a bit on the bigger side, but that is par for the course for a standalone high-speed modem. The front display shows you when the device is turned on and connected to the internet. The blue LEDs indicate that it is communicating with other devices such as routers and Ethernet switches.

More Peripherals: Best HDMI RF Modulator

Around the back, you’ll find a coaxial input, power input, and two Gigabit Ethernet ports. Performance is quite impressive as well. It’s perfect for Gigabit connections as it can maintain a 1 Gbps downstream speed frequently. It’s also backward compatible, meaning it can work with DOCSIS 3.1 as well as DOCSIS 3.0 or older.

The SURFboard SB8200 boasts multi-ISP support and excellent stability thanks to the 3GB RAM installed inside. While it’s slightly expensive, it certainly delivers on nearly all fronts. If it included a router at this price, it would have been an even better value. That does not take away from its excellence at all though, and it’s one of those devices that you can buy with your eyes closed.

NETGEAR is the only name bigger than ARRIS on this list. In fact, NETGEAR is the leading choice for hardware enthusiasts and networking professionals for consumer-level hardware. The CAX80 we’re looking at here shows why that is the case. This is a high-end modem/router combo that’s pricey but more than justifies its cost if you want to buy a modem once and forget about it for the next decade.

Best DOCSIS 3.1 Modem - NETGEAR NightHawk CAX80
NETGEAR NightHawk CAX80

This is because while the CAX80 has a lot of features that make it great now, it’s fast enough to support any internet upgrades in the future. It is a combo unit meaning that it comes with a built-in Wi-Fi router. The unit features a Wi-Fi 6 router with a dual-band frequency. This means it can operate on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz channels.

Read about: Devolo Wifi 6 Repeater 5400

It is compatible with all major cable network providers such as Xfinity, Spectrum, and Cox. Just keep in mind that it won’t work with Verizon, AT&T, or any other fiber/DSL-based internet service providers. The setup process is quite intuitive as the companion app will guide you along the way.

Speed is not an issue here either. The router can support a maximum speed of up to 6Gbps. Coverage is also quite good as it can provide a wireless connection of up to 3000 square feet. It’s also versatile in terms of connectivity. You get a 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet port, 4 Gigabit Ethernet ports, and one USB 3.0 port for connecting storage drives, printers, and other devices.

This is by far the best DOCSIS 3.1 modem if you can stomach the costs. It even features 32×8 channel bonding, which explains the ridiculously fast speeds. You also get a 30-day free trial for NETGEAR Armor. It’s an all-in-one security service that makes sure your internet and the devices connected to it are protected at all times.

Finally, this modem/router combo also features 2-port aggregation which lets you achieve up higher speeds for downloading, streaming, and gaming. While it’s one of the more expensive units on this list, it is also the most impressive.

Best for Mesh Wi-Fi

Pros

  • Seamless Mesh Wi-Fi
  • Sleek Design
  • Plenty of Ethernet ports

  • Impressive expandability

Cons

  • Expensive
  • No USB port

Max Speed: 4.2 Gbps | Gigabit Ethernet Ports: 6 | Wi-Fi Router: Yes

This one is a bit of a wildcard. While the NETGEAR CAX80 we looked at above is an excellent router/modem combo, this Orbi Mesh Wi-Fi system might be better if you’re looking for a seamless wireless connection. As this a system that includes a modem, Wi-Fi, and an additional satellite/node for mesh Wi-Fi, it is expensive. However, it is the best all-in-one package that you can get.

Best DOCSIS 3.1 Modem - NETGEAR Orbi
NETGEAR Orbi

If you’re not familiar with mesh Wi-Fi, let’s quickly explain it. A mesh Wi-Fi system works just like any other router/modem setup. The only difference is that it comes with additional access points that you can install or place anywhere in your home. This creates a separate access point that you can set up in dead zones where coverage is an issue. It expands your home Wi-Fi signal and removes some of the traffic from a single channel.

Since you’re getting a complete mesh Wi-Fi system for NETGEAR, the setup process is nearly seamless. It pairs with the Orbi mobile app which makes it easy for you to add any additional Orbi nodes down the line. The one we’re looking at here comes in a 2-pack unit. This includes the modem/router that acts as the central hub and an additional satellite that works as a separate access point.

Worth checking out : Best Ethernet Cable

You get four Gigabit Ethernet ports on the main router, as well as two Gigabit Ethernet ports on the other satellite. If you get an additional Orbi satellite, you’ll have access to even more ports. This setup provides excellent coverage of up to 5000 square feet and support 40+ devices connected simultaneously.

In terms of speed, this Orbi system can provide a theoretical maximum output of up to 4.2Gbps. It also supports Tri-Band Wi-Fi. You even get access to smart parental control and NETGEAR Armor which protects your internet connection from brute force attacks and malware.

Apart from the lack of a USB port, this Orbi Mesh Wi-Fi system has it all. While it might not be the best DOCSIS 3.1 modem in terms of value, it more than delivers on its promise of a seamless mesh Wi-Fi experience.

4. Motorola MG8702 DOCSIS 3.1 Cable Modem + Wi-Fi Router

Best for Modem/Router Combo

Pros

  • Great Value
  • Amazing Performance
  • Loads of Configuration options
  • Dual-Band Wi-Fi

Cons

  • No Wi-Fi 6 support
  • Only 2 Ethernet ports

Max Speed: 3.2 Gbps | Gigabit Ethernet Ports: 2 | Wi-Fi Router: Yes

This one is an AC3200 4×4 Wi-Fi router/modem combo that excels in terms of reliability. The Motorola MG8702 is an excellent unit considering the 2-in-1 functionality, high-speeds, and superb stability. This particular version has a Wi-Fi 5 router alongside he DOCSIS 3.1 modem. There are different versions, including one with Wi-Fi 6 support. However, the one is a bit more expensive.

Motorola MG8702
Motorola MG8702

Initially, the fact that this is a Wi-Fi 5 only router might push some people away. However, considering that Wi-Fi 5 is still fast enough for most people, this is not a bad configuration for the price. Sure, it will be slightly slower and less efficient than any Wi-Fi 6 router, but you’re less likely to notice if you haven’t used one in the past.

Even without Wi-Fi 6, this router/modem combo can easily handle any Gigabit connection. It’s fast and reliable as it works with almost any cable internet service provider out there. It also delivers a wide coverage of up to 2000 square feet making it suitable for the average home and large apartments.

It has advanced features such as Wi-Fi beamforming, guest network management, usage monitoring, parental controls, and more. All of these features lets you customize the functionality of the router, which makes it an excellent choice if you have multiple people at your home using different devices.

Despite the lackluster selection of ports and Wi-Fi 6, this DOCSIS 3.1 modem is the perfect choice if you want flexibilty with your network. The deep configuration options make it excellent for advanced users. On the other hand, it’s also easy to set up and use for beginners. It’s a versatile device through and through.

5. NETGEAR Nighthawk DOCSIS 3.1 Cable Modem (CM1100)

Best for Gaming

Pros

  • Competitive Price
  • Compact Design
  • Great for Gaming
  • Supports Link Aggregation

Cons

  • Lack of customization
  • LED indicators have poor visibility

12,475 Reviews

Max Speed: 1 Gbps | Gigabit Ethernet Ports: 2 | Wi-Fi Router: No

If you need a simple standalone modem that provides high-speed internet to your router, this is your best bet. The Nighthawk CM1100 from NETGEAR is the best DOCSIS 3.1 modem for gaming. While it lacks a lot of bells and whistles, it focuses purely on performance. This makes it an excellent choice for gamers who just want a simple setup but don’t want to leave any performance on the table.

NETGEAR Nighthawk Multi-Gig.
NETGEAR Nighthawk Multi-Gig.

Speaking of which, this NETGEAR modem delivers Gigabit speeds on most cable connections. It works with a wide variety of ISPs and the setup process is incredibly easy. The modem can provide up to 2Gbps download speeds with link aggregation. It’s also backward compatible with DOCSIS 3.0.

You get two Gigabit Ethernet ports, a simple black design, and a small footprint. While it’s nothing to write home about in terms of aesthetics, it is a modem at the end of the day. Considering most people prefer to hide routers, modems, and other networking devices, this is not a big issue. However, the LEDs on the front have poor visibility. This makes the device harder to troubleshoot.

Fortunately, you won’t have to troubleshoot anything frequently. This is a very reliable modem simply because it is light on features. The fact that it doesn’t include any gimmicks or useless features inside makes is what makes it stable.

In-Depth Review : Devolo Magic 2 WiFi Next Review

It does not include a built-in router, as this is a standalone unit. If you want to use Wi-Fi, you will need to buy a separate router alongside it. With that said, it is quite good as a standalone modem. Considering the price and the reliability, it’s the best DOCSIS 3.1 modem for gamers.

6. Motorola MB8600 DOCSIS 3.1 Cable Modem

Best for Comcast

Pros

  • Great value
  • Decent performance
  • Plenty of configuration options

Cons

  • Could use more ports
  • Issues with Mesh Routers
  • Lacks 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet

28,765 Reviews

Max Speed: 1 Gbps | Gigabit Ethernet Ports: 2 | Wi-Fi Router: No

If you have Comcast/Xfinity connection, then this is the best DOCSIS 3.1 modem you can buy. It works seamlessly out of the box, supports Gigabit speeds, and lets you configure it to your heart’s content. The Motorola MB8600 isn’t that expensive either, making it excellent for Comcast users who don’t want to break the bank.

Best DOCSIS 3.1 Modem - Motorola MG8600
Motorola MG8600

While the modem itself can support a theoretical maximum speed of up to 6 Gbps, Comcast recommends that you configure it to 1 Gbps. Fortunately, you won’t have to that yourself as the modem will do it automatically. The 6 Gbps isn’t really achievable in real-world scenarios anyway. Also, we imagine a connection like that is not something most home-users would even need.

It’s important to note that this modem is similar to the other Motorola device seen above. That’s because this one is almost the same device, with the major difference being a lack of a router. Yes, that means you will have to separately buy a router to use Wi-Fi, but that’s not a bad deal considering the price.

Other than that, it works with almost any traditional router that uses a WAN port for connection. While Motorola claims it will also work with wireless mesh routers, there may be some issues if your router only works with particular modems. For example, some TP-Link mesh routers have known to have some bugs and glitches with this modem.

More Ethernet ports would have been nice, especially one with a 2.5 Gigabit connection. That’s the only thing that’s holding this modem back. If you don’t mind those shortcomings and just want something that’s cheap and easy to set up, this is a decent DOCSIS 3.1 modem.

7. ARRIS SURFboard SB6190 DOCSIS 3.1 Modem

Best Entry-Level Modem

Pros

  • Great performance for the price
  • Affordable
  • Compact design

Cons

  • Lackluster port selection
  • Limited compatibility with Mesh systems
  • Inconsistent upload speeds

4,416 Reviews

Max Speed: 1.4 Gbps | Gigabit Ethernet Ports: 1 | Wi-Fi Router: No

The Arris SURFboard SB6190 is a very capable modem. It’s been around for quite a while now, but it’s still a popular choice for many people. It works especially well with a Comcast or Spectrum connection. While it’s a bit lacking in terms of ports and customization, it’s an excellent modem for the price.

ARISS SURFboard SB6190.
ARISS SURFboard SB6190.

First off, the setup process is relatively easy and straightforward. This is not something that you’d expect from a cheap or basic modem. It will take you less than two minutes to get it up and running. The modem features 32 downstream and 8 upstream channels, which means it can handle high-speed internet plans with ease.

As for performance, it’s quite surprising how well this modem holds up against the competition. For the download speeds, you’re looking at a maximum of 1.4 Gbps. Not bad at all for a router that doesn’t even cost $100. Unfortunately, upload speeds can be a bit inconsistent. Sometimes it will reach around 200 Mbps, and other times it will fall to below 70 or 80.

If you’re a content creator or someone who shares large files with their colleagues, this could be a bit of an issue. However, considering the price, even an 80 Mbps upload speed isn’t all that bad. Especially if you consider the excellent reliability.

Throughout our testing, we didn’t notice any sort of signal dropouts. It will run smoothly without any issues and you’ll never run into random disconnections. This is great for gamers or people who work from home and rely on a stable internet connection. Considering that, this might just be the best budget DOCSIS modem you can buy right now.

DOCSIS 3.1 Modem vs DSL vs Fiber – Which Is Better

Right now, cable internet is the most common in the US. This is because the bigger providers such as Comcast and Spectrum use coaxial cables to provide an internet connection. However, the number of ISPs that are using DSL is also quite large. On top of that, Fiber internet is also gaining traction in states like California and New Jersey.

DOCSIS 3.1 Modems will only work with a coaxial or cable connection. Cable internet provides a high-speed connection and it is often included with a TV and phone bundle. A lot of cable providers are able to provide Gigabit connections thanks to DOCSIS 3.1. It’s also more widely available in both rural and urban environments.

On the other hand, DSL does not lag far behind in terms of speed either. While Gigabit DSL connections are rarer, a lot of routers and ISPs have started to support it. A DSL connection uses telephone lines, and it’s easy to maintain and set up. It’s also more affordable. However, DOCSIS 3.1 modems and cable connections might be faster in your area.

Fiber is the latest technology. It is powered by expensive high-speed cables that are made out of a fiber optic material and glass. Fiber internet uses pulses of light that travel across these shards of fiber and glass at the speed of light. This obviously makes the technology faster and more expensive than DSL or DOCSIS.

At the end of the day, it depends on what type of service is available in your area and how much it costs. Fiber is the best option out of all three, but availability is an issue in some cities. DOCSIS and DSL modems perform around the same, but this also depends on your locality.

Does a DOCSIS 3.1 Modem Support Wi-Fi 6?

Wi-Fi 6 is a newer standard of wireless connectivity and the successor to Wi-Fi 5. It’s also known as 802.11ax Wi-Fi, if you’re looking for the technical term. Wi-Fi 6 provides a faster connection, lower latency, and improved battery life on portable devices. However, Wi-Fi 6 devices need to connect to a router that also supports the feature.

Fortunately, a lot of DOCSIS 3.1 modems will support Wi-Fi 6 routers. Just make sure that both devices can deliver on the speeds that you are looking for. Almost any DOCSIS 3.1 modem will work with any Wi-Fi 6 router provided that the router uses a WAN connection.

While clock speed and core count are important, Valorant is also optimized to run on a wide range of CPUs. As long as you have a relatively modern processor with integrated or dedicated graphics, you should be able to enjoy Riot’s popular shooter. By paying attention to your CPU’s specs and your own needs as a player, you can choose a chip that will let you frag out on the battlefield with confidence.

CPU Cores and Threads: How Many Do You Need for Valorant?

When it comes to Valorant, the more CPU cores and threads you have, the better. Valorant is optimized to take advantage of multiple cores and threads, so the more your CPU has, the higher frame rates you’ll achieve.

For the best performance, look for a CPU with at least 6 cores and 12 threads. An Intel i5 10400 or Ryzen 5 3600 would be good options. These 6-core, 12-thread CPUs will run Valorant very well at high frame rates.

  • If you want maximum FPS and performance for competitive play, aim for an 8-core, 16-thread CPU.
  • For high-resolution graphics settings, a CPU with more cores will prevent bottlenecks.

While single-core performance still matters for Valorant, having additional cores provides more headroom for background processes and multitasking. More cores also future-proof your system for newer, more demanding games.

Hyperthreading helps, but real cores are better

Hyperthreading, also known as SMT or simultaneous multithreading, allows a CPU to run two threads on each core. So a 6-core CPU with hyperthreading acts like a 12-core CPU. While hyperthreading does provide a performance boost in Valorant, real physical cores are still better.

If given the choice between a 6-core CPU with hyperthreading or an 8-core CPU without, the 8 real cores would likely perform better for Valorant. Physical cores can execute threads more efficiently than a hyperthreaded cores.

In the end, for the best Valorant experience, choose a CPU with at least 6 cores and 12 threads. An 8-core, 16-thread CPU is ideal if your budget allows for maximum performance. And remember, more cores and real cores are superior to hyperthreading alone.

AMD vs Intel: Which is Better for Valorant

When it comes to choosing between AMD or Intel for Valorant, there are a few factors to consider. Both brands offer capable CPUs for gaming, so you really can’t go wrong either way.

Performance

In terms of raw performance for Valorant, AMD, and Intel are quite comparable. Valorant is not a very CPU-intensive game, so mid-range to high-end CPUs from either brand will handle it with ease. For the best performance, look at AMD’s Ryzen 5 and 7 series or Intel’s i5 and i7 processors. These will give you high frame rates and smooth gameplay.

Price

If budget is a concern, AMD typically offers better value for the money. Their Ryzen 3 and 5 CPUs are very affordable and still provide great performance for Valorant. Intel’s lower-end i3 and i5 models can work too, but you may need to spend a bit more to get similar performance. It comes down to how much you want to allocate to your CPU versus other components.

Upgradability

Both AMD and Intel frequently release new CPUs, so either platform allows for future upgrades. However, AMD is currently using the AM4 socket for Ryzen processors, which is compatible with newer Ryzen models. Intel changes sockets more often, so upgrading may require a motherboard swap. If upgradability is important, AMD has a slight edge.

At the end of the day, you can’t go wrong with either AMD or Intel for a solid Valorant build. When choosing a CPU, consider how much performance you want, your budget, and how often you may want to upgrade components down the road. With some research, you’ll find an AMD or Intel processor that’s perfect for your needs and will allow you to blast the competition.

How We Picked and Tested

When choosing the best CPUs for Valorant, we considered several factors. First and foremost, we prioritized strong single-core performance. Valorant heavily relies on single-core CPU performance, so we looked for CPUs that offered fast single-core speeds to ensure smooth gameplay.

In addition to performance, we also considered budget. We included CPUs at a range of price points, catering to different budgets. Our selection included options starting from under $100 and going up to around $300, providing choices for gamers with varying financial constraints.

We paid close attention to overclocking potential for enthusiast players seeking maximum performance. We looked for CPUs that offered good overclocking capabilities, allowing users to push their frame rates to the limit through manual overclocking.

Recognizing that not all players have dedicated graphics cards, we also considered options with integrated graphics. These CPUs with integrated graphics are suitable for budget builds, enabling players to enjoy Valorant without the need for a separate graphics card.

To identify the CPUs that would excel in powering Valorant, we employed a rigorous testing process. We began by compiling a list of popular and well-reviewed CPUs currently available on the market. From this initial list, we narrowed down our selection based on the factors mentioned earlier.

We examined expert reviews and real-world gaming benchmarks to evaluate the CPUs’ performance in Valorant. This approach allowed us to gather comprehensive and reliable information about how each CPU performed in the game.

Factors To Consider Before Buying a CPU

There are a lot of options out there which can be overwhelming. Before you get confused and just go with the one that’s on sale, take a breath. We’re here to walk you through the key factors you need to keep in mind to make sure you get a CPU that will power through your favorite games without bottlenecking your graphics card or costing a lot. Cores, clock speed, temperatures, future-proofing, budget – we’ve got you covered.

CPU Cores and Threads: What is better for gaming?

When it comes to choosing a CPU for gaming, you want the most powerful one you can afford. More cores and higher clock speeds mean better performance for graphics-intensive games.

CPU cores are the “brains” of the processor that run the instructions in a program. For gaming, the more cores the better, as games can utilize 4 cores or more. An octa-core (8-core) CPU is great for multitasking while gaming, like streaming or recording gameplay.

Clock speed refers to how fast the CPU cores operate, measured in gigahertz (GHz). A higher clock speed, like 4.0GHz or more, means the CPU can execute instructions faster. This results in better frame rates and overall responsiveness in games.

CPU thread refers to tasks that can run simultaneously on each core. So a 6-core CPU with 12 threads can run 12 tasks at once. Hyperthreading technology allows more threads than cores, improving multitasking performance.

Pay attention to CPU temperature as higher clock speeds produce more heat. A CPU cooler and thermal paste can help prevent overheating and keep your CPU running at peak performance.

Also, consider potential bottlenecks with your graphics card and memory that could limit CPU performance. For the best gaming experience, choose a CPU that pairs well with your GPU and has enough power to support recommended requirements for the types of games you want to play.

While price is always a factor, resist the urge to go to budget when choosing a CPU for gaming. Mid-range to high-end CPUs from Intel or AMD typically offer better performance for modern PC games. An investment in a solid CPU will serve you well for years to come.

Clock Speeds

When it comes to gaming, a CPU’s clock speed tells you how fast it can execute instructions, measured in gigahertz (GHz). Generally, the higher the GHz, the faster the CPU. But gigahertz alone don’t tell the whole story.

Cores matter. More cores mean the CPU can run more instructions simultaneously. For gaming, 4 to 8 cores are ideal. AMD’s Ryzen and Intel’s Core i5 and i7 lines are great options.

Compatibility and Upgradability

When choosing a CPU for gaming, it’s important to consider compatibility and upgradability. You want to future-proof your gaming setup as much as possible, so you don’t have to upgrade again in just a few months.

First, consider the socket type of the CPU you’re interested in. The socket determines which motherboards the CPU is compatible with. Make sure the socket type of the CPU matches the socket type of the motherboard you plan to use.

Next, consider the chipset of the motherboard. The chipset determines which features are available on the motherboard, like the number of USB ports or PCIe slots. Make sure the chipset of the motherboard you plan to use is compatible with the CPU you want.

Consider the maximum amount of RAM the CPU can support. This is important if you plan to run multiple applications at once or if you want to future-proof your system. Choose a CPU that can handle at least 16GB of RAM.

Also, consider the power requirements of the CPU. Make sure your power supply unit (PSU) can handle the power requirements of the CPU you want. If you plan to upgrade your graphics card in the future, make sure your PSU can handle the increased power requirements.

Finally, consider the upgradability of the CPU. Choose a CPU that can be easily upgraded in the future. This will save you money in the long run and allow you to keep up with the latest games and technology.

In conclusion, when choosing a CPU for gaming, consider compatibility and upgradability. Make sure the CPU is compatible with the motherboard, chipset, and RAM you plan to use. Consider the power requirements of the CPU and the upgradability of the CPU. By following these guidelines, you can future-proof your gaming setup and enjoy the latest games and technology for years to come.

CPU Temperature

If your CPU temperature gets too high, it can negatively impact your gaming performance and even damage your processor. Most CPUs can operate normally up to around 95°C, but for optimal performance, you want to keep temperatures below 85°C when gaming.

There are a few ways to monitor your CPU temperature. Many motherboards come with built-in sensors and software to check temps. You can also use a third-party tool like Core Temp or HWMonitor. When gaming, check your temps regularly using one of these tools. If you start to approach 90°C, it’s time to take action to cool things down.

Keeping your CPU at a stable, optimal temperature will ensure maximum performance for gaming with no throttling or damage over time. Monitor temps regularly, improve cooling when needed, and make adjustments to prevent overheating. With some preventative maintenance, you can keep your CPU running cool for years of high-performance gaming.

Potential Bottlenecks

To avoid CPU bottlenecks when gaming, choose a CPU that won’t hold back your graphics card. For mid-range graphics cards like the GTX 1660 or RX 5600 XT, a 6-core or 8-core CPU is a safe choice. For high-end graphics cards like the RTX 2070 or RX 5700 XT and up, an 8-core CPU or better is recommended to avoid bottlenecking performance.

By considering factors like cores, clock speed, and socket type, and avoiding potential bottlenecks with your graphics card, you can choose a CPU that will handle your gaming needs for years to come. The right CPU, combined with a solid graphics card, lots of memory, and a fast SSD for storage will provide an incredibly smooth gaming experience on even the most demanding of titles. Think through your options and you’ll be dominating the leaderboards in no time!

Best CPU for Valorant - FAQs

Do I need a high-end CPU for Valorant?

Not necessarily. Valorant is optimized to run on a wide range of hardware. While a more powerful CPU will allow for higher frame rates and graphics settings, Valorant can run perfectly fine on mid-range CPUs. For solid performance, a modern quad-core CPU like the Intel i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 will work great.

How much CPU power does Valorant need?

Valorant requires at least a dual-core CPU with SSE2 support, like an Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD Athlon 64 X2. For the best experience, Riot recommends a quad-core CPU, like an Intel i5, AMD Ryzen 5, or equivalent. Valorant is more dependent on your CPU than your graphics card.

Do more CPU cores equal better performance in Valorant?

Not always. While Valorant can utilize multiple CPU cores, clock speed is more important for high FPS. A CPU with fewer but faster cores may provide better performance than one with more, slower cores. An Intel i5 with high clock speeds will typically outperform an AMD Ryzen 7 with slower clocks in Valorant.

Can I get by with an older CPU?

Older CPUs can still run Valorant but may struggle to maintain high frame rates, especially in team fights. If you have an older quad-core or six-core CPU, like an Intel Core i5/i7 from a few generations back or an AMD FX series, Valorant should still be playable, but you may need to lower some graphics settings for the best experience.

A wireless CarPlay adapter allows you to add Apple Carplay or Android Auto support to any car that has support for wired CarPlay. Since the built-in infotainment systems for most cars are not that great, both Apple Carplay and Android Auto are viable alternatives. Previously, both of these standards would only work by plugging in your phone to a car that supports the feature. However, in 2015, both were updated to work wirelessly.

Now, while most major car manufacturers have support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, not all cars will support them wirelessly. If you hate carrying cables with you all day, this can be quite inconvenient. Cables can be finicky, they can get lost, or even stop working altogether. This gets even more frustrating if the charging port on your phone is already somewhat unreliable.

best apple car play adapters
Best Wireless Apple CarPlay Adapters In 2024

Fortunately, these wireless CarPlay dongles can make your life a lot easier. Just plug them into your car’s USB-A or Type-C port that supports CarPlay, pair your phone, and you’re good to go. In this guide, we’ll be going over a few of these adapters, how they differ from each other, and ultimately, finding the best wireless CarPlay adapter that’s right for you.

Can Wireless CarPlay Work With Any Car?

This is where things can get a bit confusing. If your car already supports wireless CarPlay or Android Auto, then there’s no need to go out and buy a wireless adapter for your car. On the other hand, if your car does not support wireless CarPlay but works with a cable, then you can plug in a wireless adapter to eliminate that wired connection. The same goes for Android Auto.

However, if your vehicle’s head unit or dashboard does not support CarPlay, you’re out of luck. There’s still a way around this, as you can go out and get an infotainment screen or dashboard that supports it. For example, Car and Driver’s IntelliDash is a good way of getting around that issue.

Unfortunately, if you’ve ever bought third-party tech gadgets for your car, you’re likely aware of how compatibility can be an issue. For example, some older Honda cars don’t work with certain CarPlay adapters, even if the car manufacturer says they support CarPlay natively. So, while some wireless CarPlay adapters may not be compatible with wireless CarPlay or Android Auto, the majority of them will work fine.

Ultimately, it will come down to trial and error, as that’s just the nature of most car tech. If you find that a certain wireless CarPlay adapter does not work with your car, contact the support page and either ask them to fix the issue, or go for a refund.

Factors To Consider When Buying a Wireless CarPlay Adapter

A wireless CarPlay adapter might be essential for those of you who want to continue using CarPlay, but don’t want to deal with the hassle of plugging in your phone. However, with the countless options available, it’s a bit of a hassle to find exactly what you’re looking for.

While sticking with our recommendations is a good idea, it might not always be possible. Things go out of stock, some may get discontinued, and prices may go up. In that case, we’ve put together a buyer’s guide to make your life easier.

We tested dozens of CarPlay adapters and sifted through multiple versions to make sure you buy the right device. After a lot of investigating, we’ve put together this buyer’s guide so you can have a better idea of what to look for.

Compatibility

The first thing you need to be sure of is compatibility. Most wireless CarPlay adapters will work with iOS 9 or later. As long as you have a relatively recent iPhone, compatibility should not be much of an issue. However, vehicle compatibility is another thing entirely. The product’s page will tell you what types of cars the adapter works with.

Most manufacturers have a sheet that details all of this information. This will include the make and model of the car. During your research, you’ll find that some CarPlay Adapters only work with cars that were released in 2016 or later. So, pay close attention to this, so you don’t end up buying something that doesn’t work with your vehicle.

The Setup Process

A good wireless CarPlay adapter should be easy to set up. Fortunately, this is not an issue with most of the products that we picked. They feature a plug-and-play functionality, meaning you just plug in the adapter, pair it to your phone, and you’re good to go. However, there are other things to consider here.

For example, you might need to upgrade the Firmware every now and then. Some CarPlay adapters will update over the air, while others will require you to plug in a USB with the new Firmware. Update time also varies between different models.

Connection Stability

When you’re shopping for a wireless CarPlay adapter, it’s important that the connection is stable and reliable. Coupled with a fast start-up time and a strong Wi-Fi/Bluetooth connection, the adapter should be reliable in terms of audio or video playback as well.

Many cheaper adapters will work on the service, but they’ll start to show issues with audio playback. Sometimes they’ll be a couple of seconds behind on song, skipping tracks could be laggy, and the overall experience just goes down from here. None of our picks below have this issue.

Price

Last but not least, you’ll want to worry about the budget. Wireless CarPlay adapters can cost anywhere from $50 to $300 (USD). That’s quite a wide range and just makes the buying decision more difficult. However, just because an adapter is cheap, that does not mean it’s bad. The same logic applies to higher-end adapters.

Instead of just looking at the price, look for what you need. Consider what features you need, and which is the best option under your budget. For example, if you don’t have multi-user and Android Auto support, you can get away with a cheaper pick. On the flip side, if you want reliable video playback, then the CarPlay adapter (or AI Box) will be more expensive.

1. OTTOCAST Wireless CarPlay Adapter U2-X Pro

Editor's Choice

Pros

  • Rock solid connection
  • Easy setup process
  • Minimal lag
  • Smart Button is a great addition

Cons

  • Expensive

Compatibility: iOS 10/Android 11 or later | Android Auto Support: Yes | Connectivity: USB Type-C, Bluetooth

To start things off, we have our editor’s choice – The OTTOCAST Wireless U2-X Pro. This is a wireless CarPlay Adapter that also has support for Android Auto. Out of all of the options we tested, this is our top choice based on reliability, ease of use, and of course, overall value.

Best Wireless CarPlay Adapter -Ottocast U2-X Pro
Ottocast U2-X Pro CarPlay Adapter

The U2-X Pro is easy to set up, and after unboxing it, you’ll have the device up and running in under two minutes. For certain vehicles, you might have to do a firmware upgrade to get it up and running, but that entire process isn’t too hard either. Once everything is set up, you can leave the wireless CarPlay Adapter plugged in at all times. As long as you have it paired to your iPhone via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, it will automatically bring up the CarPlay menu whenever you step inside your vehicle.

The connection is rock-solid, and it can use both 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi for faster transmission. As for the boot time, the device takes about 15-20 seconds to startup. It’s compatible with most iPhone models, as long as you’re on iOS 10 or later. As for Android, your phone should be on Android 11 or later. Speaking of which, it supports both full-screen and split-screen modes for Android Auto.

It does a good job of adapting to your dashboard’s screen size and aspect ratio. Whether your display is vertically or horizontally, the device will automatically figure it out and correct the video output. This wireless CarPlay adapter uses a Type-C port for connection and can pair to your iPhone via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.

There’s also a USB Type-A port on one side, so you can connect it to the computer, check the settings, and upgrade the Firmware. Finally, it also features a convenient button at the back, known as the Smart Button. Press and hold this button for 1 second to return to the main UI, hold it for three seconds to enter the firmware upgrade menu, and if you want to reset the device entirely, hold the button down for 10 seconds.

While this is quite a basic feature, it comes in handy if you ever switch phones and need to quickly reset the device or upgrade the firmware. Apart from a standard Type-A to Type-C cable, it also comes with a fast Type-C to Type-C cable if your car uses that for CarPlay.

Considering that this wireless CarPlay adapter works seamlessly, is easy to set up, and has no real flaws, it’s easy to recommend as the top choice. While the price isn’t all that economical, it’s worth the investment compared to cheaper (and unreliable) options out there.

2. Carlinkit 3.0 Wireless CarPlay Dongle Adapter

Most Popular

Pros

  • Easy to set up
  • Stable connection
  • Multi-user support
  • Great value

Cons

  • No support for Android Auto

1,754 Reviews

Compatibility: iOS 7.1 or later | Android Auto Support: No | Connectivity: USB Type-C, Bluetooth

Next, we have a wireless CarPlay adapter which is one of the more popular options available on Amazon. The Carlinkit 3.0 adapter is a safe bet considering its easy setup processor, reliable connection, and support for multiple devices. While the complete lack of support for Android Auto is a bit of a shame, this adapter is a solid pick all around.

Best Wireless CarPlay Adapter - CarLinKit 3.0
CarLinKit 3.0 CarPlay Adapter

To start things off, this adapter is nothing out of the ordinary. Out of the box, you’ll get the device itself, some paperwork, and USB Type-A to Type-C cable. If your car uses a Type-C port for the CarPlay connection, you’ll need to get a different cable. We can’t knock the company for this, since most cars use a Type-A port anyway.

As for the setup process, it is similar to the OTTOCAST adapter we looked at previously. It takes about a minute to set up, though if you need to upgrade the Firmware, that does take a bit longer. There’s a green LED at the top of the device, which flashes when you pair it to your iPhone.

More Peripherals: Home Theater Power Manager Guide

Moving on to compatibility, this device will work with almost any iPhone as long as it is using iOS 7.1 or later. The oldest iPhone we were able to test it with was an iPhone 6 running iOS 10, so it’s safe to say compatibility should not be too much of an issue.

An interesting feature is that you can change the icon packs once you’re within CarPlay. It takes a bit of time to do so, but if you want to, the feature is there. Another interesting addition is the fact that you can have multiple devices paired at the same time. When you do so, the device will ask you which phone you want to use for the CarPlay connection each time. This is handy if you share your car with other people, and want them to have access to CarPlay wirelessly.

Other than that, this wireless CarPlay adapter is competitively priced and manages to keep up with the more expensive options out there. Compared to the OTTOCAST adapter above, it’s a bit slower when starting up, and it does lack support for Android Auto. If those issues seem minor to you, then you won’t have any complaints with this one.

3. Hieha Wireless Apple CarPlay Dongle

Best Budget Pick

Pros

  • Works with 5G
  • Stable connection even at long distances
  • Easy setup process
  • Quite affordable

Cons

  • No support for Android Auto
  • Startup time is a bit slow

276 Reviews

Compatibility: iOS 7.1 or later | Android Auto Support: No | Connectivity: USB Type-C, Bluetooth

If you don’t want to spend upwards of $150 on a wireless CarPlay adapter, you should consider getting this one. While this Hieha dongle is quite unassuming compared to others on this list, it does get the job done fine. The connection is quite stable, the setup process is simple, and it won’t cost you an arm and a leg.

Best Wireless Carplay Adapter - Hieha Wireless Careplay Adapter
Hieha Wireless Careplay Dongle

The fact that this cheap wireless dongle has support for 5G and a 5GHz Wi-Fi connection is quite impressive. Because of that, the overall connection is quite reliable. It even does a good job of pairing to your phone when you are further away. Of course, there’s a limit to the range, but it’s better than what you’d expect at this price.

More Connectors: The 5 Best Ethernet Cable For Gaming In 2022

There’s little to no audio delay once you’re connected, and the overall lag is minimal. Of course, all wireless CarPlay adapters will have a bit of lag for the interface, but unfortunately, that’s just par for the course. Other than that, the setup process is easy, and the UI for pairing and connecting is simple to navigate.

Updating is quite easy as well, as the company has a lot of tutorials on its website. The firmware upgrade takes about 3-4 minutes, but we only recommend doing so if you’re running into problems. Otherwise, we’d recommend you stick with the stock firmware and software version.

So, what are the downsides of getting a cheaper CarPlay adapter such as this one? Well, for one, there’s no support for Android Auto at all. Other than that, the startup time is longer compared to others on this list. If that bothers you, maybe consider our first pick above.

Aside from that, there’s no real flaw with this one, and it nails all of the basics. If you don’t care about extra features such as multi-user or Android Auto support, it’s a good purchase to save some money.

4. OTTOCAST CarPlay AI Box PICASOU 2

Most Versatile

Pros

  • Includes an HDMI port
  • Netflix and YouTube work wonderfully
  • Multiple interfaces
  • 1080p Output

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Setup process is a bit complex

Compatibility: iOS 9/Android 10 or later | Android Auto Support: Yes | Connectivity: USB Type-C, Bluetooth, HDMI

On the surface, this is just another simple wireless CarPlay adapter. However, once you start to dig deeper, it is so much more than that. It also serves as an AI Box for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Before we talk about some of the main features, let’s dig into what that means for you.

Ottocast Carplay AI Box
Ottocast Carplay AI Box

So, this CarPlay adapter works like any other. Plug it into your car’s supported USB port, pair your iPhone or Android, and you’re good to go. However, once you launch it, you can select from three different interfaces. This includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and the company’s custom interface that uses a version of Android 10.

Tablet Reviews: Best 8-Inch Tablets of 2024: Expert Reviews & Comparisons

Essentially, this interface turns your car’s dashboard into an Android tablet. This allows you to download apps from the Google Play Store, watch videos on platforms such as YouTube or Netflix, and even play certain video games. In short, anything that you could do on an Android tablet, you can do so through this wireless CarPlay adapter.

While this is a bit much for everyday use, it’s great for those who are on the road frequently. People who work in delivery services, truckers, and repair technicians will appreciate this type of device the most. It even includes an HDMI port, allowing to connect the device to rear seat displays.

Finally, you can also use this device as a set-top box for a TV. While this is not the most ideal setup, it can come in handy if you’re at a hotel and want to use an Android interface for the TV. The versatility is incredible here, and if you just want a more intuitive interface, you can just switch to Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

We understand this device won’t be for everyone because of its niche use case and high price, but it’s worth highlighting for those who spend a lot of time on the road.

5. OTTOCAST U2-Air Wireless Carplay Adapter

Most Intuitive

Pros

  • Sleek and compact design
  • Intuitive setup process
  • Reliable and stable connection

Cons

  • A bit overpriced
  • No Android Auto support

3,078 Reviews

Compatibility: iOS 9 or later | Android Auto Support: No | Connectivity: USB Type-C, Bluetooth

So far, out of all of the devices we’ve tested, OTTOCAST wireless CarPlay adapters prove to be the most reliable. If you’re not looking for something with Android Auto support, and the AI Box above feels like it’s a bit much, then the U2-Air is the perfect option for the middle-ground.

OTTOCAST CarPlay U2 Air
Ottocast CarPlay U2-Air

Now, keep in mind that this one does lack quite a bit in terms of features. For example, there’s no Android Auto support, no multi-user support, and you’re paying a bit more over the Hieha adapter above. What you’re getting in return is a wireless CarPlay adapter that’s easy to set up, will work 9 times out of 10, and won’t frustrate you with complicated settings.

More Reviews: Best Laptop For Working From Home in 2024

Out of the box, it comes with a Type-C to Type-C port, as well as a traditional USB-A to Type-C port. So, it doesn’t matter what type of port your cases your for CarPlay, as this device will work either way. Other than that, the setup process is similar to other OTTOCAST devices. Plug the device into your car’s USB port, pair your iPhone, and you’re good to go.

Other than that, there’s not much to say about this one. The design is sleek and compact, so you can easily hide it away in your car. The single LED is dim and unobtrusive, it doesn’t make any sounds while pairing, and generally stays out of your way most of the time.

So, while it’s not our first pick if you need something more basic and just works out of the box, this might be your best bet.

How We Picked and Tested The Best Wireless CarPlay Adapters

A wireless CarPlay adapter can either be a convenient gadget or a major source of frustration. This is why it’s important to know what to look for. A lot of these CarPlay adapters come from brands you’ve likely never heard of before. This makes it tough to figure out which devices you can trust to work reliably. On top of all that, we all know how inconsistent wireless technology can be, so that just makes things even more difficult.

As such, you can probably guess that putting together this roundup was no easy task. To start things off, we started doing our research by taking a look at the most popular choices. Then, we had to individually test and compare dozens of them against each other based on several different factors.

These factors include the following:

  • Intuitiveness: A good wireless CarPlay adapter should be easy to set up, have simple menus, and features that are easy to use and navigate.
  • Connectivity: Wireless connections can be hit or miss, so we had to make sure that our chosen picks had a rock-solid connection that was uninterrupted at all times. This is a major issue with many third-party adapters, so we had to test this thoroughly.
  • Boot Time: How long it takes for the wireless CarPlay adapter to automatically turn on and connect to your phone. You don’t want to wait for the adapter to finish booting up when you’re in a hurry.
  • Compatibility: This was less of an issue, as most adapters will work iOS 9 or later. However, we still had to check thoroughly for those of you who are on an older version of iOS.
  • Design: While you shouldn’t expect much in terms of aesthetics from a wireless carplay adapter, the design should be minimal and unobtrusive. After all, it’s going to sit in your car at all times.

Considering the above factors, we started to shorten our list to just five out of the dozens of options available. After that, we ranked them based on value, performance, and reliability. Each adapter on this is list is great in its own right, it just comes down to what you’re looking for at the end of the day.

A home theater power manager is a necessary investment to protect the longevity of your expensive entertainment devices. As home theaters have become increasingly popular, having multiple devices such as TVs and amplifiers can leave them vulnerable to electrical fluctuations or spikes that can damage their internal hardware.

Investing in a good power manager is critical for prolonging the lifespan of your devices. A premium power manager will control all electrical fluctuations and spikes, ensuring a steady flow of electricity to your devices.

This article will go over the best home theater power managers. We have considered various aspects like price, performance, design, size, and portability.

What Is a Home Theater Power Manager?

A home theater power manager is an essential device for anyone who has a home theater setup. It manages the power consumption of your home theater. Essentially, a home theater power manager acts as a surge protector, a power strip, and a timer all in one.

The key function of a home theater power manager is to protect your expensive home theater equipment from power surges.

Power surges are sudden fluctuations in your home’s voltage. Power surges can harm the internals of your devices and shorten their overall lifespan. So, it is essential to invest in the best home theater power manager as soon as possible.

In addition to providing surge protection, a home theater power manager also serves as a power hub, allowing you to plug in multiple devices at once. This can be very handy if you have multiple devices, like a TV, console, or streaming device. Secondly, it also reduces cable clutter and makes your setup look organized and neat.

Another key feature of a home theater power manager is the timer function. This function allows you to set a timer for your equipment so that it will turn off automatically after a certain amount of time. This can be useful if you tend to fall asleep while watching TV or if you want to ensure that your equipment isn’t using unnecessary power when you’re not using it.

Overall, a home theater power manager is a valuable investment for anyone who wants to protect their expensive home theater equipment.

Apart from the aesthetics, the Panamax MR4300 is a great performing home theater power manager. It is efficient at protecting your devices from surges and spikes. The next power manager on our list is for budget-conscious consumers. It is also from Panamax, which is the trusted brand for home theater power managers. The Panamax MR4000 is an affordable option from Panamax. It is a great choice for a power manager, as it comes with premium features without the hefty price tag.

Home Theatre Power Manager - Panamax MR4000
Panamax MR4000

Starting with the looks, the Panamax MR4000 has a minimal and sleek design in a black color theme. It is objectively a better design than the Panamax MR4300 we discussed earlier. The Panamax MR4000 features eight protected and filtered outlets on the back, a digital monitoring screen on the front, and an inlet on the front as well. It sadly does not have nine outlets like the MR4300, but for the price, it is a fair sacrifice. Also, if you are on a budget consider checking out our best budget computer speakers.

Furthermore, Panamax did not fall short in the protection and performance departments. Even for a budget home theater power manager, the protection is great. It does not have AVM, Protect, or Disconnect like the MR4300, but it is still a viable option. It will still safeguard your devices from electricity spikes and fluctuations.

Another plus of the Panamax MR4000 is that it comes with a lifetime warranty for the devices connected.

Furman is also a reputable brand like Panamax when it comes to power managers. The company produces high-end surge protectors. That is the reason why our next pick is the Furman P 1800 AR Regulator. This is a premium option, so it does come with a hefty price tag. But the price is justified for the premium protection features.

Home Theatre Power Manager - Furman P1800 AR
Furman P1800 AR

The Furman P 1800 AR does lack when it comes to looks. It comes with a very basic and old design. The size, on the other hand, is quite small, which is important if you have a tight space. The build is quite sturdy and feels premium in the hand.

Apart from its aesthetics, the Furman P 1800 comes with solid protection features. It has features like True RMS Voltage Regulation, which delivers stable 120 volts to your devices and protects them from voltage spikes. 5. Panamax M4315-PRO Power Conditioner

Best Rack-Mounted Power Manager

Pros

  • Perfect for rack-mounting
  • EMI/RFI filtration
  • 10 outlets
  • Remote-controllable

Cons

  • Quite expensive
  • Requires ethernet for remote control

Total Power Outlets: 12 | Size: 39.8 x 5.6 x 5.3 | Voltage: 120 | USB Ports: N/A

As you’ve probably figured out at this point, Panamax is the go-to brand for high-end if you need a home theater power manager. The M4315-Pro is one of the expensive options on this list, and one of the few that are designed to be mounted in a rack system.

In terms of design, this home theater power manager is gigantic. While it’s not all that tall, it is quite longer than any of the others we’ve looked at so far. After taking it out of the box, you’ll also find rack-mounting accessories. We recommend mounting this one to your rack, as you’ll have a hard time finding an alternative place anyway.

Panamax-M4315-PRO
Panamax M4315-PRO

So, why is this one so expensive? Well, for one, it’s a high-end rack-mounted power delivery unit that features automatic voltage monitoring, 15 Amp outlets, and an auto shut-off feature. The latter means that this unit will automatically shut down once it goes above or below the pre-determined thresholds ((95-134V). Secondly, the linear filtration is second to none.

If you have a powerful amplifier that tends to “hum” because of unstable voltage, this power manager might be able to resolve that issue. The linear filtration cleans up the signal, and that will stop any devices from making any noise.

Finally, this one also works with the Panamax Bluebolt app, allowing you to control the device remotely. However, you will need to connect this to your home network via Ethernet if you want to do so. The app can be a bit of a pain to set up initially, but once everything is good to go, you won’t have any problems in the future.

In conclusion, this one is catered towards the enthusiasts who already have a server rack setup for A/V receivers, ethernet switches, and maybe even a NAS. Sure, it’s not for everyone, especially if you are in a tight budget and want something that is easier to set up.

6. Panamax VT1512-IP Vertical Power Conditioner

Best Vertical Power Manager

Pros

  • Vertical Design
  • Compact Size
  • 12 Outlets
  • EMI/RFI filtration
  • Affordable

Cons

  • No AVM

Total Power Outlets: 12 | Size: 39.8 x 5.6 x 5.3 | Voltage: 120 | USB Ports: N/A

Home theater power managers can be quite bulky and large, and that can be an issue if you are tight on space. If you fall into that category, then this one is for you. It is the Panamax VT1512-IP Vertical Power Conditioner. It is the best vertical power manager from Panamax.

Panamax VT1512
Panamax VT1512 Vertical Power Manager

Things You Should Know About a Home Theater Power Manager

Home theater power managers are a must-have for anyone looking to safeguard their home theater system against potential electrical disturbances. These devices include a number of features that protect your equipment from power surges, voltage drops, and electrical noise, among other things.

When shopping for a power manager for your home theater system, it’s important to consider factors like capacity, connectivity, placement, and maintenance, as well as the cost. By selecting the right power manager, you can ensure that your expensive audio and video components are protected and can enjoy a longer lifespan.

In this article, we’ll delve into some of the key things you should know about home theater power managers to help you choose the right one for your system.

Features

When choosing a power manager for your home theater system, look for one that has a variety of features designed to protect your equipment. Surge protection is essential because it can help prevent damage from power surges. Voltage regulation is also important because it can help maintain a constant voltage level even when power sags or brownouts occur. Another useful feature is noise filtering, which can help eliminate electrical noise that can interfere with your audio and video signals. Some power managers also have automatic shut-off features that can protect your equipment during a power outage.

Capacity

When choosing a power manager, make sure that it has enough capacity to handle the power demands of your home theater system. Look for a model with a high enough wattage rating to accommodate all of your components, including your TV, audio receiver, and any other devices you have connected. Keep in mind that some components, such as power amplifiers, may require more power than others, so factor this into your calculations.

Connectivity:

Also, check to see that the power manager you choose has enough outlets for all of your components. Some models also come with USB ports for charging your mobile devices. Make sure that the outlets are spaced far enough apart to accommodate bulky power adapters.

Placement

To ensure that your power manager provides maximum protection for your equipment, place it between your wall outlet and your home theater system. This will ensure that all power is filtered and regulated before it reaches your equipment. If you have multiple components that need to be protected, you may need to use a power strip or multiple power managers.

Installation

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully when installing your power manager. Improper installation can compromise its effectiveness and even damage your equipment. Make sure that all connections are secure and that the power manager is grounded properly.

Maintenance

Regularly check your power manager for any signs of wear or damage. Look for frayed wires, cracked casings, or other signs of wear that could compromise its effectiveness. Replace your power manager if you notice any issues, as a damaged power manager may not provide adequate protection for your equipment.

Cost

Home theater power managers can range in price from relatively inexpensive to quite expensive. Consider the cost of your equipment and the level of protection you want when deciding which model to purchase. While a more expensive power manager may offer more features or better protection, it may not always be necessary depending on the quality of your home’s electrical system and the value of your equipment. Ultimately, choose the model that best meets your needs and budget.

How We Picked and Tested the Best Home Theatre Power Manager

Usually, when we’re putting together a “best of” article on Appuals, we put every product through a rigorous and tedious testing process. Selecting the best of the best home theater power managers among the myriad options available online was no easy task. This is especially considering the fact that most of them are professional-grade options, and feature information that is confusing to the average consumer.

As such, we decided to compile our list based on ease of use, the setup process, the number of outlets, and overall result in terms of protection capability. Everything else was just marketing fluff. Keeping these three things in mind, we were able to compile seven of the best home theater power managers out there.

Of course, some are more expensive than others. This doesn’t necessarily mean that expensive power conditioners aren’t worth it, it’s just that a good number of them might not be worth it for you. Most people reading this already have a niche use case, and further confusing them with utterly expensive options would not make much sense.

Despite that, we still included a few high-end options for the odd reader that is looking out for some professional gear. After we cherry-picked six of these modulators, we decided to test them based on different metrics.

The most important to us was their protection capability. Power managers are an essential component in your home theater. This is why we made sure to test that they can protect your devices from spikes and fluctuations. Furthermore, we also made sure to test surge protection. A power manager must be able to handle all sorts of surges and safeguard your devices against the worst.

Finally, we rank each power manager based on our testing and selection criteria, providing an unbiased view of each product’s strengths and weaknesses. We also provide a list of pros and cons to help you make an informed decision based on your specific needs and budget.

In conclusion, we take great care in selecting and testing the best home theater power managers available. Our selection process ensures that we provide accurate and trustworthy information, enabling you to make an informed decision and protect your home theater system from electrical disturbances.

Buyer’s Guide for Home Theatre Power Managers

A home theater power manager is an essential device for anyone who wants to protect their home theater equipment and manage their power consumption. And with the countless options available, it can be a hassle to find what you are looking for.

To make your life a little easier and help you find what you are looking for, our team tested dozens of power conditioners and sifted through tons of options to ensure you get the right product.

And after investigating, we have compiled a guide for the buying the best home theater power manager.

Surge Protection

When it comes to power managers, they must have good protection against surges.
So, look for a power management system that includes surge protection. This will protect your expensive home theater equipment from power surges caused by lightning strikes, power outages, and other electrical problems.

Number of Outlets

Everyone has different-sized setups with various devices. It is essential to buy a power manager to house all your devices. And it’s even better to get something with an extra port. Having extra ports will benefit you in the future if you want to connect some extra devices.
So, consider the number of devices in your home theater setup when shopping for a power manager. Then look for a power manager that has a sufficient number of outlets. This will help organize your setup and reduce clutter.

Power Rating

Another factor to consider when shopping for a power manager is the power rating. This is the total power draw of all your components. You can do this by checking the specs of the power manager you are interested in. Make sure to calculate the total power draw of all your devices, then buy a power manager accordingly. It is also a good idea to give yourself some breathing room and purchase something that is rated slightly higher than your requirements.

Price

Price is a key factor when it comes to power managers. There are both expensive and cheap options available. The more expensive options come with more features and are slightly better. A good budget power manager, on the other hand, will get the job done. So, consider your requirements and your budget while making the decision.
Another thing to consider is that if you have an expensive setup, going with a premium power manager is a good idea because it is safer and lasts longer.

Brand and Warranty

The power manager is a very important device in your home theater setup. If it fails to do its job, then your entire setup is at risk. The way to avoid this is to buy your power manager from a reputable and trusted brand like Panamax or Furman. The cheaper options do look convincing, but when it comes to power managers, going for the more premium option is often safer.

Secondly, check the warranty offered by the brand. For example, Panamax offers connected device warranties in case their power manager damages your device. It is ideal to take both of these points into consideration and make a well-thought decision.

In summary, when choosing a home theater power manager, look for a device that offers surge protection, has enough outlets for your components, has a sufficient power rating, includes a timer function, fits your budget, comes from a reputable brand with a warranty, and has positive user reviews. By considering these factors, you can find the best home theater power manager to protect your equipment and improve your overall home theater experience.

When deciding on the size of a tablet, it’s important to consider your requirements. An 8 inch tablet is a good size for basic tasks like web browsing, reading e-books, and watching videos. It’s compact, making it convenient to carry around and use on the go.

If you need to use your tablet for more demanding tasks like gaming, photo editing, or heavy multitasking, an 8 inch tablet may not be the best choice. In this case, you might want to go with a larger tablet with a larger screen size, such as a 10-inch or 12-inch tablet. Larger tablets provide more robust performance, making them better suited for demanding tasks.

Ultimately, it all depends on your particular requirements, whether you want something for entertainment or work. While an 8 inch tablet may be ideal for some, others may require a larger screen size to meet their requirements. It’s essential to consider your specific requirements and make a decision based on them.

Insider Tips: Essential Information for Buying the Best 8-inch Tablet

While we have already covered the prime aspects of buying the best tablet for yourself, it is also important to be aware of the additional aspects that can impact your decision. These factors can include the tablet’s operating system, App support, etc. To make an informed purchase, it’s crucial to consider both the primary and secondary factors involved in choosing the best 8 inch tablet for your needs.

Operating system

An 8-inch tablet typically runs on a popular operating system, such as Android or iOS, and may also have a third-party operating system tailored specifically for the tablet’s manufacturer, like the FireOS on Amazon tablets.

iOS has the best UI and features and works hand-in-hand with the hardware to give you a smooth experience. The main reason Apple products feel so fast and efficient is because of the OS.

Android, on the other hand, is open source. Many manufacturers, build their own OS on top of Android. Android itself is well-built and offers good performance, though the UI can be a bit complicated at times.

Third-party operating systems like Amazon FireOS, which are generally built on Android, have their own pros and cons. If you use Amazon services on a daily basis, the Fire OS is perfect for you, as it comes with all of them integrated into the device, making it easier to manage.

It’s important to consider the operating system and what you’re familiar with before purchasing a tablet.

App support

When it comes to app support, it’s essential to consider what apps you need for your specific use case. Popular app stores like the Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store offer a vast selection of apps, including productivity, gaming, and entertainment apps. Be sure to check that the tablet you’re interested in supports the apps you need.

Designing or drawing

If you’re interested in using your tablet for digital art or graphic design, you may want to consider the quality of the tablet’s screen and the availability of stylus support.

A high-resolution display with accurate colors and good viewing angles is essential, and a stylus can provide more precision when drawing.

Right now, Apple iPads are the best for digital art because of the Apple Pen and the wide range of design apps available. Secondly, iPads have the best screens and color accuracy in the market right now.

Multitasking

If you plan on using your tablet for multitasking, you may want to consider its processor and RAM. A tablet with a fast processor and sufficient RAM will perform better when running multiple apps simultaneously.

A fast-performing table is essential if you want to accelerate your workflow. So, consider checking and researching the specs of the tablet you want.

Storage

The storage capacity of a tablet is another important factor to consider. You’ll need enough storage to store your apps, documents, photos, and other content. Some 8 inch tablets may come with expandable storage options, such as a microSD card slot, allowing you to increase the tablet’s storage capacity if necessary.

Having a solid Wi-Fi connection in your home or office building is important. You don’t want your daily productivity ruined by having to deal with internet issues all the time. This becomes even more important if you are someone who works from home. Unlike at an office, there won’t be any IT guys there to help you solve your Wi-Fi issues.

PRODUCT INFO
WiFi 6 Repeater 5400
Manufacture Devolo
Available at View at Devolo UK

As such, having a robust system in place is important. Picking the right network devices can make a major difference in the long run. We’re looking at one such device today, the Devolo Wi-Fi 6 Repeater 5400. This is a versatile device that can operate as a mesh satellite, access point, or extender.

Devolo Repeater 5400 front
The repeater blends easily into any room

It is a small compact device that can be conveniently placed anywhere in your home or office. Furthermore, this one is loaded with configuration options and technical settings to help you fine-tune your Wi-Fi performance. However, the best part is that this repeater is deceivingly simple to use, despite the in-depth options available.

In this review, we’ll be going in-depth and trying to explain why this repeater is so good. Apart from that, we’ll also be discussing a few technical terms so you so you can have a better understanding of what a mesh Wi-Fi system is and how it works.

Let’s dive into it.

Unboxing Experience

Devolo Repeater 5400 box
Devolo doesn’t shy away from making a bold statement.

The Devolo Wi-Fi 6 Repeater is a simple device, so there’s not much in the way of the unboxing experience here. It arrives in a basic-looking white box, and the front of it proudly boasts “Devolo cures weak Wi-Fi”. Some strong and bold marketing here, that’s for sure. Apart from that, the front also tells you about the Mesh Wi-Fi capabilities, warranty, and compatibility.

Devolo-Repeater-5400-box-contents
Box contents

The repeater is tucked nicely away in the box, surrounded by some soft packaging. Apart from the repeater itself, you’ll find a power cable/adapter, and a manual to set it up. Just by glancing at the manual, you can already tell how simple the setup process is going to be.

Other than that, there’s not much in the way of accessories. Now, let’s move on to the design and features of this repeater.

Design and Appearance

The green LEDs indicate strength of the signal

We will get into the technical specifications and everything a bit later on, so you can better understand how this device can provide a real upgrade. Before we do that though, let us get into the design and features first.

We previously reviewed Devolo’s Magic 2 Wi-Fi system, which was more of a Mesh Wi-Fi/Powerline solution. That might be more up your alley if you’re looking for more LAN ports and a Mesh Wi-Fi system that provides even more coverage. The repeater we’re reviewing today instead is more of a standalone product, even though it can be used for Mesh Wi-Fi.

So, as you can tell from the pictures, this repeater is more of a simple-looking white box. The design is quite minimalist, and it makes sense since it can blend easily into any room. Branding is also very limited, and the only appearance of that is the company name on the right side of the repeater. We’re glad they did not go overboard here.

The front four LEDs light up green to show the signal strength. If all four bars light up, that means you have a rock-solid connection. Whether you use it as an access point, repeater, or mesh satellite, it performs best when you are getting three or four bars.

Devolo-repeater-5400-rear
It includes two Gigabit Ethernet ports as well.

At the bottom, you’ll find a nice and sturdy stand. This allows you to place it conveniently on any desk or shelf. Since it comes with a meter-long cable to attach to your main source, obstructions are few and far between. It also does a good job of maintaining signal strength between walls and other rooms.

Around the back, you’ll find a port for AC power, two Gigabit Ethernet ports, a button to pair with WPS, and a reset switch. To access the reset switch, you’ll need to unfold a paper clip and insert it in the hole to reset the router. This is a feature that is similar on many network devices.

Key Features

Now, let’s talk about the features, and what this repeater can do. First off, if you don’t have Wi-Fi in a particular room, you can use this as an access point. You can do that by connecting it to your internet source with the Ethernet cable. If you want to use it as a repeater, just press the WPS button on your router, and then press the Add button on this repeater.

Devolo-repeater-5400-front-view
The design is compact, allowing you to fit it in any room.

Here are some other key features:

  • Extended range for existing Wi-Fi system
  • Excellent performance thanks to Wi-Fi 6 standard
  • Transmission speed that is up to 5400 Mbps
  • Two Gigabit Ethernet ports
  • Multiple antennas for different connection
  • Dual-Band design (2.4GHz and 5GHz)
  • 4×4 MIMO on 5GHz radio
  • Wide compatibility with nearly every router
  • Plug-and-play functionality

The main highlight here is the fact that this router uses the Wi-Fi 6 Standard. Allow us to explain what that means before we carry on with the review. Wi-Fi 6, technically known as 802.11ax Wi-Fi, is a newer Wi-Fi standard. The latest is Wi-Fi 6E.

So, Wi-Fi 6 is faster and better because of improvements in two technologies: MU-MIMO and OFDMA. The former (Multi-user, multiple input/output) allows routers to communicate with up to 8 devices. This is more than double of the previous generations.

Similarly, OFDMA is a technology that allows data to travel between multiple devices from a singular point. Of course, previous standards had these features to some extent, but Wi-Fi 6 has improved them in a lot of key ways; mainly speed and overall reliability.

Of course, you also get access to Dual-Band Wi-Fi with this one. The repeater provides access to both 2.4GHz and 5GHz connections. The former provides wide coverage with great signal integrity, while the latter is faster and features more bandwidth.

So, if you’re device uses a 2.4GHz connection, that’s what the repeater will provide. However, if it has a 5GHz connection, it will provide a 5GHz connection.

Setup Process and Software

The “Add” buttons activates the WPS connectivity with your router.

One thing I immediately loved about this Devolo repeater was its intuitive and easy setup process. It provides you with a few ways to set it up either as a repeater or as an access point. Before we get into the setup process, let us talk about the different modes.

Repeater Mode

When you use the device as a repeater, you are essentially expanding the range of your pre-existing wireless network. There are no cables involved, and the setup process can be followed simply by downloading the Devolo app on your phone.

You should use this mode if you don’t want to route Ethernet cables between walls and rooms.

Access Point Mode

When you use the device as an access point, you just add an additional point for your devices to connect to via Wi-Fi. However, you will need an Ethernet cable to connect the device to your main network router/modem. Fortunately, they include one in the box.

Devolo Home Network App

So, Devolo provides a few ways of setting up the device, regardless of repeater and access point modes. You can use the Home Network app available on the App Store or Google Play Store. Alternatively, there’s an old-school web interface.

Finally, to use this device as a repeater, you can press the WPS button on your router, and then press the Add button on the repeater.

For the purposes of this review, we used the iOS app to set up this device as a repeater. The wizard walks you through the setup process, and it’s as simple as pressing a few buttons. After you are done setting up, you can use the app to see all of your connected devices, network settings, and more.

Setup process from the Devolo app

By going to the web interface, you can also set up separate channels for 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi. All in all, for a device that is so versatile, it is great to see that the setup process is so simple.

Performance

For a device that supports Wi-Fi 6, you would only expect top-of-the-line performance. Fortunately, this repeater delivers on that front exceptionally well. This repeater supports a maximum of 54000Mbps transmission speed.

Of course, your devices can’t really get the full benefits of that bandwidth. This is because some of that bandwidth is used by the downstream connection to the router. Even then, this repeater has a gigantic effect on the Wi-Fi performance in your room.

Here’s a good example. I have a 100Mbps internet connection in my home. However, there are certain rooms and areas in my house where the average download speed can be consistently low. After installing this repeater, the speeds increased by up to 50%, coming quite close to that full 100Mbps connection.

In rooms that are farther away, the performance is even better. For example, the download speed went from 10-15Mbps to a full 80Mbps in a room that is quite far away from the repeater. Since it uses Wi-Fi 6, it boosts the wireless signal significantly.

So, while it won’t magically increase internet speed, it will provide a cure for weak Wi-Fi in spots where coverage is unreliable. If you have a larger space and there are certain areas where Wi-Fi is weak or the speed is slow, this repeater will improve that experience.

You can also set it up as a Mesh Wi-Fi system, and Devolo actually sells a full kit for that solution. However, in most homes, just this repeater paired with a good router could be more than enough.

Is it Worth Buying?

In conclusion, the Devolo WiFi 6 Repeater 5400 is a versatile device that does its job very well. It ticks all of the right boxes since it performs well, is easy to use, and blends in with almost any room. Simply put, this is one of the best repeaters out there. Another important thing of note is that we haven’t noticed any issues with signal strength or speed throughout our testing.

That is an important aspect since many repeaters work fine out of the box, but start having issues quickly down the line. That hasn’t happened with this one yet, and we don’t expect it to happen either. So, it’s an excellent device through and through.

However, it is a bit expensive, and while it is certainly powerful, not everyone will need that level of performance. That’s the only downside of this otherwise excellent router, if Devolo had priced this more competitively, it would have been a no-brainer. Still, for someone who can take advantage of the versatility and extra features, it is an excellent product through and through. It gets an A+ recommendation from me.

Do I Need a WiFi Card for My PC?

Yes, you surely need a WiFi Card for your PC if your router is far away and your motherboard doesn’t have built-in WiFi and you want to enjoy high-speed internet without worrying about connectivity issues. WiFi Cards tick all the right boxes since it performs well, are easy to use, and fit in almost any PC Case. Their performance is marginally better than the USB WiFi dongles as they have an onboard heatsink, and external antennas which provide a better overall experience and also a fantastic internet quality.

On the other hand, If we talk about the Ethernet cable, then the Ethernet Cable is more reliable and stable than the WiFi card. WiFi introduces ping variance that’s why it is less desirable for gaming compared to cable. Ethernet cables instantly transfer data via light signals. Besides, the WiFi transmits data using radio waves which can be sometimes susceptible to distortion and congestion.

But keeping the above-mentioned issues in mind, a PCIe Wireless card would get the job done.

What is the Fastest WiFi Card?

The fastest PCIe WiFi Card is the TP-Link Archer TXE72E providing a peak bandwidth speed of up to 5,378 Mbps. It features WiFi 6 technology which is the most recent WiFi network protocol and is a substantial upgrade over its predecessor. It comes with the latest Intel WiFi 6E chipset providing a more stable and reliable wireless connection. Moreover, it also includes Bluetooth 5.2 which helps in connecting all your wireless devices without any USB Bluetooth dongle, and the WPA3 Security standards to better secure personal, and enterprise networks.

Things You Should Know About WiFi Cards

WiFi cards for PC tend to be pretty simple, however, there are certain confusing terms that most people will not be familiar with. Throughout this guide, you might have run into technical jargon such as MU-MIMO, OFDMA, Dual-band WiFi and the like. Knowing about these features (and what they do), can help you make a better buying decision.

Here are some things to know about WiFi cards before buying for your PC.

Wi-Fi Standard

Whenever you go out to buy a new router, WiFi card, motherboard, or anything that is related to your network connection, you’ll run into Wi-Fi standards. Of course, terms such as “802.11ax WiFi” might sound like jargon to most readers. Here’s a quick summary on WiFi standards.

So, the number first three digits in “802.11ax” represent computer networks, and the “.11” part stands for WLAN or WiFi. The digits “802.11” are followed by letters such as “ac” or “ax”. For example, 802.11ac WiFi or 802.11ax WiFI. These letters represent the speed and WiFi protocol.

WiFi 5 is also known as 802.11ac WiFi, while Wi-Fi 6 is 802.11ax. Of course, WiFi 6 is faster, more reliable, and has tighter security. Most new devices that are capable of a WiFi connection will feature support for it.

Does that mean WiFi 5 is bad? Not at all. WiFi 5 is still fast enough for most people, it’s just that WiFi 6 has better security and allows more devices to connect simultaneously. While a PCIe card that uses WiFI 5 will be enough for most people, we recommend hunting for WiFi 6 if you’re buying a new card today.

Range

Range is not something you need to worry about explicitly. However, this does depend entirely on where you place your PC. If your phone can easily pick up WiFi in the room where your PC is, then you don’t need to worry too much about range.

On the other hand, if your PC is placed considerably further away from your router, that’s where you will start to run into problems. In that case, it’s better to look out for a router with a wider range.

OFDMA and MU-MIMO

Continuing with the on-going theme of WiFi 6, let’s talk a bit about OFDMA and MU-MIMO. OFDMA is a new feature that was introduced with Wi-Fi 6. It allows multiple devices to communicate with your router, meaning a WiFi 6 router can allow data travel to different devices from just one transmission.

On the other hand, MU-MIMO, or Multi-user, multiple input/output, will allow WiFI 6 routers and other devices to communicate with each other. The official spec tells us that you can connect up to 8 devices at the same time. While you could already do this on previous WiFi standards, MU-MIMO ensures that the speed remains same throughout all of your devices.

So, don’t just fall into the marketing gimmicks with these terms. While they are great features, all WiFi 6 devices have them, and you shouldn’t buy a device just because it says it has “OFDMA” support on the product page.

Bluetooth Versions

Buying a WiFi card for your PC is like hitting two birds with one stone. This is because all WiFi cards will also add Bluetooth support to your system. WiFi 5 cards feature support for Bluetooth 5.0, while WiFi adds support for Bluetooth 5.1 and later. Finally, WiFi 6E card add support for Bluetooth 5.3, but those are few and far between right now.

Buyer’s Guide for WiFi Cards

Apart from the standards and features we talked about above, there are additional things to look out for when buying a WiFi card. So, before you go out and spend money on any device, take a look at this buyer’s guide to figure out what you need out of a WiFi card.

OS Compatibility

Of course, before you go out and buy a WiFi card, you need to make sure it is compatible with your operating system. However, if you are on a Windows PC and are running Windows 10 or later, then you don’t need to worry about this.

On the other hand, if you are a Linux user, then OS compatibility is something to take into mind. Linux distros can be notorious for not working properly with WiFi or Bluetooth devices. So, look out for any mention of Linux support in the product page of the WiFi card you are planning to buy.

Size

Most PCIe WiFi cards will fit into your motherboard’s PCIe x1 or x16 slot. So, in this case, you don’t really need to worry about size. This is especially true considering most cards will use the x1 slot rather than the x16. As such, it is highly likely that you have an empty x1 slot on your motherboard. Since WiFi cards are so tiny, installation is easy as well.

However, take into account that installation won’t be as easy on pre-built PCs or ITX cases. You’ll have a hard time accessing the motherboard in those cases. So, make sure you get a WiFi card that is compact in size, but also easy to install or remove.

Antennas

Moving on, you’ll notice that most of the WiFi cards on this list have two or more antennas. As you can imagine, having more antennas on a device is usually good for signal strength. Sure, while that’s true to an extent, the internal configuration of the WiFi card also matters a lot. The controller on the WiFi card that is responsible for your wireless connection needs to be good as well. However, as a general rule of thumb, two or three antennas on a PCIe WiFi card is always a good thing.

Budget

Next up, we can’t forget about budget. However, this discussion is entirely situational. Do you need a stron Wi-Fi connection to transfer files over your network? Or do you just need something that provides you with a wireless connection so you can stream video? In both situations, you need a wireless connection, but the use case is different. This is what will dictate your budget.

You can go out and buy an expensive WiFi 6E card that performs well, but if your internet connection or workflow can’t take advantage of that speed, then it is sort of a waste of money. So, make sure you’re buying something that you’re actually going to use for a considerable period. Fortunately, WiFi cards aren’t all that expensive either way, so some people might not worry too much about budget in the first place.
